Crossing Jordan (2001-2007)

The cast of Crossing Jordan.
Universal Television

Crossing Jordan was a modest hit for its time, but in retrospect, it had a cast that a lot of modern shows would kill to have. Mahershala Ali was there for the first season, and the rest of the performers included Miguel Ferrer, Kathryn Hahn (Agatha All Along), Jerry O’Connell, and Leslie Bibb. But this isJill Hennessy’s show after her starmaking stint on Law & Order.

Hennessy plays Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh, a brilliant forensic pathologist who takes it upon herself to investigate the cases that might otherwise remain unsolved. Jordan has the instincts of a detective, and the keen ability to put all of the clues together. The series wisely gave Jordan a solid cast to play off of, and none more so than her boss, Dr. Garret Macy (Ferrer). With over 100 episodes to binge through, this series can keep you entertained for several weeks to come.

St. Denis Medical (2024)

Allison Tolman in St. Denis Medical.
Universal Television

Mixing drama and comedy is tricky, especially when the latter can easily overpower and undercut the former. But NBC’s new show, St. Denis Medical, seems to be walking a fine line between parody and comedy with some serious moments mixed in. Fargo‘s Allison Tolman leads an ensemble cast of the show that picks up the mockumentary format used by The Office and Parks and Recreation.

Alex (Tolman) is a supervising nurse working under Joyce (The Goldbergs‘ Wendi McLendon-Covey), the executive director of St. Denis Medical, a woefully underfunded hospital in Oregon. A lot of the hospital’s doctors and administrators have very different ideas about how St. Denis should be run, and some very real health care issues to face. So far, this is one of the most intriguing new shows of the fall season.

Anatomy of Lies (2024)

Elizabeth Finch in Anatomy of Lies.
Peacock

Elizabeth Finch’s path to success in Hollywood played out like a story of her own creation. Finch presented herself as a cancer survivor whose multiple tragedies propelled her to be one of the primary writers and producers on Grey’s Anatomy. If that seemed too good to be true, that’s because it was. Peacock’s Anatomy of Lies details the layers upon layers of deceit that Finch wove over the years, even to the point of shaving her head and pretending that she was battling cancer while on the show.

Ironically, this documentary series couldn’t exist without Finch’s biggest victim: her wife, Jennifer Beyer, who exposed her spouse’s lies. Beyer and her children cooperated with the team behind this series to provide a firsthand look at how Finch lied to them and betrayed them for years.

The 50 best shows on Netflix in November 2024
The cast of Cobra Kai.

For a streamer that made its name on binge-watching, Netflix has really embraced the split-season model this year. That's why we have fresh episodes of Arcane this weekend, as well as new episodes of Cobra Kai. That Karate Kid sequel series has proven to be so popular that it's bound to hit No. 1 on the list of the most popular shows on Netflix now that Cobra Kai season 6, part 2 has arrived.

Netflix has also just added A.P. Bio, a sitcom that previously ran on NBC and Peacock. This is a show that never achieved the popularity it needed to last longer than four seasons. But if any streamer can revive interest in this series, it's Netflix.
