Hulu takes jab at Netflix price hike, drops basic plan to $6, starting today

Hulu announced last month that starting February 26 its new subscription prices would go into effect. This news came a week after Netflix announced it had raised prices on its three subscription plans. While Hulu has lowered its prices on its basic subscription plan by $2, bringing it down to $6, it’s also raising its prices on its Hulu Live TV plan and its Hulu No Ads Live TV plan. According to AdWeek, Hulu is making this move after finding that cutting its basic plan price helps accelerate subscriber growth.

New subscribers to Netflix will find these prices in the above chart. Netflix has become a huge production house, producing original content and reportedly spending $8 billion on its house-produced films and TV shows in 2018 alone. But its basic plan is $3 more than Hulu’s and that can make a huge difference for subscribers.

Starting today Hulu’s basic subscription plan with limited commercials drops from $8 to $6. It’s Hulu No Ads is staying at $12, meaning it will cost twice as much to get its basic plan with no ads. There’s a significant increase on its Hulu + Live TV plan which offers 2 simultaneous screens. The price for that plan is being raised from $40 to $45. And lastly, the Hulu No Ads + Live TV plan is going from $44 to $51. You can watch Hulu using a Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google Chromecast, XBox One or XBox 360, Playstation 3 or 4, or Wii.

With the basic Hulu plan you can watch such favorite shows as Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, Scandal, New Girl, or How to Get Away with Murder. To find out which channels Hulu Live TV offers in your area you’ll need to enter your zip code. Depending on your location you’ll receive local channels among other free content. Some of those other channels included are A&E, Boomerang, Bravo, CNN, E!, ESPN, Food Network, Fox News, FreeForm, Lifetime, MSNBC, Oxygen, USA, Viceland and more. For a full list click here.

James Gunn refutes claim that certain characters are too niche for the DC Universe
James Gunn wears glasses and looks to the camera in DC Studios video.

Momentum has been slowly building for well over a year now for James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe. The multimedia, DC Comics-inspired franchise hasn't officially begun, though. That long-awaited moment will come when the new Gunn-created animated Suicide Squad spinoff TV series, Creature Commandos, premieres December 5 on Max. Nonetheless, Gunn is already not only receiving criticisms from some comic book readers and superhero fans but also pushing back against certain claims.

The DC Studios co-CEO did that very thing when one fan recently argued on Threads that Gunn's decision to greenlight projects about "niche" characters like Sgt. Rock and Swamp Thing makes it seem like he's only "making the DCU for hardcore comic book readers and not for the general audience." In response, Gunn wrote, "Don’t put Swamp Thing in the corner. That’s a project in development we’ve actually announced, and he’s an incredibly well-known character with not only some of the greatest comics of all time but [also] a successful film series and his own TV show, something that could be said of only a very small handful of DC characters."

Next-gen AirPods Max headphones might take a while to hit the shelves
Apple AirPods Max with USB-C in Orange.

Apple’s 2024 launch slate has been pretty stacked across the board. From flagship iPads rocking a generation-first desktop processor ahead of Macs and diversifying the AirPods TWS lineup even further to reimagining the Mac Mini, Apple didn’t leave fans disappointed.

The only weak link, so to speak, was the top-of-the-line Max headphones. Instead of a meaningful hardware refresh for the otherwise highly anticipated successor, what fans got was a color revamp and a USB-C port. Unfortunately, it looks like a true refresh is still a bit further into the future.

Glicked gives the box office its best pre-Thanksgiving weekend in more than a decade
Two witches stares up on the left and a Roman solder stands on the right.

Wicked and Gladiator II didn't quite recreate the phenomenon that was Barbenheimer, but it got pretty close. The movies combined for a $205 million weekend, with Wicked pulling in $114 million in the U.S. and $165 million worldwide and Gladiator II making $55.5 million.

That's on par with 2019, when Frozen II pushed the box office to $204.9 million, and the best weekend since 2013, when The Hunger Games: Catching Fire drove all titles to a $226.5 million weekend.
