DJI’s tiny Pocket 2 gimbal camera launches with big improvements

DJI – Meet DJI Pocket 2

DJI has officially launched an updated version of its popular Osmo Pocket gimbal camera.

Dropping “Osmo” from its name, the diminutive device for stabilized video footage and stills is now called the DJI Pocket 2.

Learning plenty from the first-generation Pocket, the new version brings a slew of improvements and new features that could catch the eye of serious vloggers.

First up, the DJI Pocket 2 comes with a 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor, larger than the 1/2.3-inch sensor that shipped with its predecessor. It can also take images at 64 megapixels, up from 12 megapixels.

One complaint with the original Pocket was that its 80-degree field of view was too narrow for selfie videos, though admittedly this could be adjusted using a lens adapter. The Pocket 2 fixes that with a wider 93-degree field of view.

The new f/1.8 lens is also brighter than before, and therefore combined with the larger sensor should produce better results in low-light conditions.

The upgraded Pocket camera shoots stabilized 4K/60p video at 100Mbps and now comes with an HDR mode for improved dynamic range, while a new attachable joystick offers easier control of the camera.

Another complaint about the first Pocket was its lackluster audio quality that deteriorated further when your hand accidentally covered the microphone while recording. DJI says it’s performed a “complete rework of the audio system,” adding four microphones that have been “strategically placed” away from your hands. Wireless microphones are also an option.

The tiny display remains, but you can pair the Pocket 2 with your smartphone via the DJI Mimo app for a better view and more control.

Something else that stays the same is the operating time on a single charge, which remains at 140 minutes when shooting video.

DJI is selling the new Pocket 2 in a couple of packages — basic and the “Creator Combo.” The basic offering costs $349 and comes with the joystick, a cover, a tripod mount, a wrist strap, a smartphone adapter, and a power cable.

The combo, at $499, comes with all of the above plus a wireless microphone transmitter and cover to reduce wind noise, a “do-it-all handle” for extra accessories, a wide-angle lens, and a tripod.

The DJI Pocket 2 goes on sale on November 1, 2020.

DJI Air 2S enters pro territory with its one-inch camera sensor and 5.4K video
dji air 2s drone one camera sensor news specs price lifestyle 2 of 4

One company that’s been getting a ton of exposure lately is DJI. Just last month, the company announced its most ambitious drone to date, the DJI FPV drone, which finally brought the company into the world of first-preson view (FPV) drones. Now, it looks like there’s still more gas in the tank because we’re getting yet another brand-new drone!

Following in similar footsteps to Apple, the DJI Air 2S is a refresh of the company’s Mavic Air 2 drone from less than a year ago. Boasting the same compact and foldable design from before, the Air 2S is most notable for the 20-megapixel, 1-inch sensor it’s boasting -- a substantial size upgrade over the ½-inch sensor used by the Mavic Air 2. With a larger sensor, you can expect better results, especially in lowlight situations, because it’s able to absorb more light.

DJI Mini 2 gets upgraded with 4K video, OcuSync tech, and stronger motors
dji mini 2 drone release news specs price press 1

When DJI announced the Mavic Mini last year, many people were astounded by the drone's ability to fly under the radar without Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) registration, thanks to its 249-gram weight. While it was praised for that, one of the biggest critiques from consumers was that it lacked 4K video recording -- topping out instead at 2.7K recording. Well, those concerns have been addressed by its successor, the DJI Mini 2, which packs that capability and many more while continuing to be able to fly under the radar at the same light weight.

This announcement is a bit of a surprise, given that DJI rarely comes out with successive drones this quickly. Take the DJI Spark, for example, which was released in 2017 and was the lightest drone in the company's portfolio -- until the release of the Mavic Mini last year. The standout feature with the Mini 2 is 4K video recording, a useful option for those who want a bit more elbow room when editing clips in post. Not only has the resolution been increased, but the bit rate also went from 40 Mbps previously to 100 Mbps with the Mini 2. However, its frame rate at 4K peaks at 30 frames per second (FPS).
