Down Periscope? Its app is no longer needed to live-stream on Twitter

twitter app livestream launch periscope live stream feat

Twitter is further blurring the lines between the Twitter app and Periscope. The company has enabled the ability to live-stream straight from the Twitter app, which basically means that you’ll no longer need Periscope on your Android or iOS devices to live-stream.

To live-stream within the Twitter app, all you need to do is hit “compose tweet,” then press the “Live” button. Periscope users will find using the new feature easy — simply write a caption, then go live, just like you would within Periscope.

The Periscope name isn’t completely dead — even when you live-stream within the Twitter app, you’ll still see that it’s “powered by Periscope.” Not only that, but according to the Pericope team, the Periscope apps and web player on periscope.tv will remain in place and fully functional. Still, there really isn’t any reason to download the Periscope app anymore — the vast majority of users will be totally fine with the live-streaming capabilities in Twitter.

This is also a big step for Twitter itself, which is going head to head with the popular Facebook Live. Twitter also has some big names behind it — it’s got exclusive deals with the likes of the NFL and Wimbledon, as well as this year’s U.S. presidential debates. The company is clearly hoping deals like this will convince people to use Twitter’s live features over Facebook’s.

The fusion of Twitter and Periscope really was inevitable. But now that users can live-stream straight from the Twitter app, it remains to be seen how long the company will keep Periscope around at all. We all know firsthand how trigger-happy Twitter can be with the apps it owns: Remember how it went for the Twitter-owned Vine?

Apple finally makes it harder to stalk Android users with its new Tracker Detect app
Apple Airtag in different polyurethane and leather key rings and loops

Apple has announced and released a new AirTags tracker app for Android called Tracker Detect. This has been done to resolve one of the privacy issues inadvertently introduced with AirTags earlier this year -- the ability to track someone without their knowledge. Once it was installed and a scan was initiated, the app was able to highlight unknown AirTag trackers nearby, essentially revealing the location of strangers and opening the door for planting an AirTag on someone without their knowledge to keep tabs on them.

AirTags were released earlier in the year as a rival to Tile and other Bluetooth trackers. They leveraged Apple's Find My network to help users track lost items by communicating with a combination of Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband. Unlike Tile trackers, they could also be used to geolocate lost items. However, AirTags also came with an unintended consequence: They could allow people to be tracked without their knowledge by simply tagging their clothes or personal property. Apple users would be protected against it as an iPhone running iOS 15 would be able to detect that an unknown AirTag was found moving with you, but that was not an option for Android devices.

WhatsApp upgrades its disappearing messages feature
WhatsApp

WhatsApp will now allow you to make your messages vanish for all new chats. It's a feature that means that all messages sent within a conversation will disappear after a period of time, with the company letting you choose between a day, a week, or three months.

"As more of our conversations move from face-to-face to digital, we acknowledge there is a certain magic in just sitting down with someone in-person, sharing your thoughts in confidence, knowing you are both connecting in private and in that moment. The freedom to be honest and vulnerable, knowing that conversation isn’t being recorded and stored somewhere forever," the WhatsApp team explained.  The feature is rolling out now on iOS and Android. Enabling it is done by opening the WhatsApp settings and navigating to Account>Privacy>Default Message Timer.

Jack Dorsey resigns as CEO of Twitter, hands reins to CTO Parag Agrawal
Jack Dorsey, co-founder and former CEO of Twitter

It looks like Twitter founder Jack Dorsey is leaving the chief executive's office once again — but this time, it's by choice.
Sources within Twitter first shared the news with CNBC earlier this morning, and it’s now been confirmed by Dorsey himself — quite appropriately via a Tweet on his social media platform.

While the original reports didn’t have much to say about why Dorsey was stepping down, or when it would be happening, it didn’t take long for the erstwhile CEO to share the news himself. In his tweet, Dorsey includes a screenshot of the email that he sent internally to Twitter employees, describing it as part of his desire for Twitter “to be the most transparent company ever.”
Dorsey explains that although he will continue to serve on the board until the end of his term next spring, as of today, he is officially handing over the reins of CEO to Chief Technology Officer Parag Agrawal, as confirmed by the company’s board of directors. The board also named Bret Taylor as the new chairman of the board, He will succeed Patrick Pichette in that role.
In his internal email, Dorsey also shared that he has no plans to remain on the board after his term expires, as he feels “it’s really important to give Parag the space he needs to lead.”
Dorsey says that he’s leaving because he feels it’s best to separate a company from its founders, and that now is the right time to do so. “I believe it’s critical a company can stand on its own, free of its founder’s influence or direction,” Dorsey said in the message to Twitter employees.
Based on the message, it appears that Dorsey has been planning this for a while. He noted that he’s been working hard “to ensure this company can break away from its founding and founders.” It’s just been a matter of finding the right person to take over the helm, and Dorsey had been grooming Agrawal for some time, due to “how deeply he understands the company and its needs.”
“Parag has been behind every critical decision that helped turn this company around. He’s curious, probing, rationale relative, demanding, self-aware, and humble. He leads with heart and soul, and is something I learn from daily. My trust in him as our CEO is bone deep,” Dorsey told employees in the internal email.

Dorsey's past with Twitter has been marred by controversies
Over the years, Dorsey has had a somewhat tumultuous relationship with the company that he helped to create in 2006. He initially served as CEO until 2008, but was pushed out of the role after his co-founder Evan Williams and the board felt that he was unfit to lead the growing social media company.
While Dorsey remained with Twitter as chairman of the board, he refocused most of his attention elsewhere, forming the popular mobile payment company Square. Once that was up and running, Dorsey rejoined Twitter in early 2011 to focus on product development, dividing his time between that and his ongoing work at Square.
After four more years of struggling to come up with a long-term vision, Twitter’s board returned Dorsey to the position of permanent CEO of Twitter in fall 2015, replacing Dick Costolo, who had taken over from Williams in 2010.
During Dorsey’s second tenure, he’s presided over a social network that’s faced some significantly new and different challenges.
