Fossil is working on a smartwatch with BMW, and it’s coming next year

Watch brand Fossil has shown off its first watches to wear the BMW name. After the two companies announced a partnership in 2018, they said a BMW smartwatch would be coming, and now we know it will be a touchscreen model and not a hybrid. The launch is expected sometime in 2020.

The first BMW watches have been shown off at the Baselworld watch show, which is currently taking place in Basel, Switzerland. While Fossil makes hybrid watches alongside its touchscreen models, the BMW smartwatch will be a touchscreen model, and is therefore highly likely to use Google’s Wear OS software. No other details were shared, but we can expect a design similar to what’s seen here, along with some BMW-related features.

Fossil designs and distributes the watches made in collaboration with BMW, and the examples you see here are some of the first designs in the range. Currently, it’s split into two lineups, a motorsport-inspired collection and a classically styled collection. We had a chance to try some of the watches on, and took an instant liking to the classic versions that use the famous BMW roundel as part of the watch face. Interestingly, the colors match BMW colors, so it will be possible to match your watch to your car’s actual paint job. We can speculate that watch faces on the future smartwatch will replicate this too.

Prices for the watches launched already vary between $295 and $375, which corresponds to the average price of Fossil’s smartwatches. The company also works with Skagen, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Diesel, and Emporio Armani — all of which have smartwatches in the range. BMW would stand almost alone if its smartwatch came out sooner, as few other car manufacturers have released branded smartwatches. Aston Martin has partnered with Tag Heuer on a limited-edition Connected Modular 45, for example, ; but few others exist.

The Fossil and BMW partnership is so far set to last until at least 2023. However, outside of a vague 2020 release date, we do not know exactly when the BMW smartwatch will arrive. The mechanical designs seen here will be out soon, and make us look forward to seeing the smart version.

A new Motorola-branded smartwatch is on its way for a launch by the end of the year, according to a press release shared by CE Brands, the current owners of the Motorola brand for smartwatches. The company has claimed to have already completed work on a Moto Watch 100, branding it an affordable premium smartwatch that will be going into mass production over the next month.

"Our newest smartwatch, the Moto Watch 100, which is designed for an entry-level price point, is scheduled to begin mass production in November 2021. With several major retailers in line for initial orders to test the product, we believe the Motorola brand coupled with an affordable premium-feeling smartwatch has the potential to be a truly disruptive product," the release reads.

Disappointingly, Wear OS 3 won’t be saving Android smartwatches for a while yet
Galaxy Watch 4 Classic on the wrist.

It all started out so well. Google working with Samsung and Fitbit on an updated version of Wear OS that would be faster, provide longer battery life, and enable more apps was exactly what we wanted -- an injection of effort, investment, and excitement into a piece of software that had stagnated for too long.

“It’s not just for Google and Samsung,” said Google’s Sameer Samat about Wear OS 3 at Google I/O 2021, putting our minds at rest, “it’ll continue to be available for all.” Excellent news, but what he actually should have said is, "available for all, eventually," because the software we hoped would be the Android smartwatch’s savior in 2021, won’t really be doing much saving for a while yet.
What’s the problem?
Wear OS 3 is available on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, and that’s the way it looks set to stay until the second half of next year. There’s an argument to be made that it’s right for Samsung to benefit from the software platform it co-developed first, but that’s not the impression Google gave, and not really the idea behind any of Google’s software generally. Android has always been for everyone, while Wear OS 3 isn’t just yet.

Fossil’s Gen 6 smartwatch leaks as a powerful Galaxy Watch 4 contender
best android smartwatches fossil gen 5e wrist women

Fossil had previously confirmed that it would be launching powerful new smartwatches to take advantage of Google's Wear OS 3, and now a leak from the reliable WinFuture shows off the upcoming watch. With a Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor, 8GB of storage, and all-day battery life, it might just prove to be a force when it comes to hardware.

Going into the specs, WinFuture says that the Fossil Gen 6 will have a 1.28-inch OLED display with always-on functionality. It will reportedly be available in 42mm and 44mm sizes, and be water-resistant up to 5 meters.  There will also be options for straps, with leather, fabric, and metal variants planned.  Fossil will also offer different designs for men and women, with the internal components and material choices remaining the same regardless.
