Now is the time to pick up and wear a discounted TicWatch smartwatch

Mobvoi TicWatch C2
Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

Mobvoi, makers of some already very well priced Wear OS smartwatches, is running a promotion that may entice even more people to pick up the best of its wearable range. Visit Mobvoi’s website, and you can get 20-percent off the usual cost of certain watches, provided you check out using PayPal. Yes, that’s a caveat, but it’s not like Mobvoi’s asking you to pay in flesh, or with magic beans.

There’s no indication how long the promotion will run, so if you’re keen we’d suggest not waiting around too long, just in case you miss out. The question then is, which Mobvoi Ticwatch model should you buy? The 20-percent discount only applies to the TicWatch C2 and the TicWatch Pro, and not the more recent TicWatch E2 and TicWatch S2 models.

Our recommendation is the TicWatch C2, the company’s most stylish smartwatch, which costs $200. Buy one of these and use PayPal, and it’s yours for $160. Mobvoi even has some of its World Cup special edition watches left, which come with the flag-related NATO strap of your choice for free.

The TicWatch C2 has all the features you want in a smartwatch, including GPS, a heart rate sensor, NFC for Google Pay, and all the usual Google Wear OS apps and services. The whole watch has IP68 water and dust resistance, and comes in a choice of rose gold, onyx, or our personal favorite, platinum color schemes. We recommend the C2 due to the minimalist style that will suit most wrists, rather than the more masculine TicWatch Pro.

This doesn’t mean the TicWatch Pro should be disregarded. It’s the more technically impressive smartwatch, as it has two screens layered on top of each other. Activate the monochrome LCD rather than the AMOLED screen showing Wear OS, and the Pro’s battery life jumps to as much as 30 days. Way better than the one day we’re used to with Wear OS. The feature list continues with a heart rate sensor, IP68 water and dust resistance, GPS, and NFC.

Normally, the TicWatch Pro is $250, but with the PayPal discount it’s yours for $200. This brings it far below the price of our current Wear OS favorite, the $255 Fossil Sport. While the PayPal promotion is only running in the U.S. at the moment, the TicWatch Pro has been discounted in the U.K. too, where it’s priced at 195 British pounds, down from 215 pounds.

This is a good opportunity to spend even less on a smartwatch that’s already considered a bargain.

Google’s Wear smartwatch software update list is short, and the wait is long
Main menu on the TicWatch E3.

If you’re waiting for news on when, or if, your Wear OS smartwatch will receive an update to the new version of the software announced during Google I/O, there’s some good and bad news ahead. Google has listed the smartwatches eligible for an upgrade, and the timeframe expected, but neither are likely to be what smartwatch owners were hoping for.

The new version of Wear OS, which Google refers to as Wear OS 3 but had introduced it as Wear before, will eventually arrive on the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 and its 4G/LTE connected counterpart, and the TicWatch E3, plus unannounced models from Fossil and Mobvoi expected later in 2021. It won’t be arriving very quickly either; as Google states that it “expects our partners to be able to roll out the system update starting in mid to second half of 2022.”

There’s reason to be skeptical of the $80 TicWatch GTH’s health tracking
mobvoi ticwatch gth news wrist

Mobvoi has announced a new smartwatch, but unlike the TicWatch Pro 3, it does not use Google’s Wear OS software, and it’s not round either. The TicWatch GTH smartwatch has its own proprietary software, and is square in design. It’s also much cheaper than the TicWatch Pro 3 at just $80. The company is promoting the GTH as a smartwatch for health tracking, but we should be careful about how much faith we put in both the wearable's sensors and Mobvoi's claims regarding its ability.

The TicWatch GTH includes a selection of sensors we’re used to seeing on wearables, such as a heart rate sensor and an SpO2 (oxygen saturation) monitor, plus more unusual features like skin temperature monitoring. Although it’s not going all-in and saying it considers the GTH watch as a wearable that will detect symptoms of COVID-19, there are enough mentions of it in the press release to put two and two together. This is a problematic path to tread.

The release states that blood oxygen saturation is “a key indicator of COVID-19, even before other symptoms are present.” It also says that the skin temperature monitor “checks if you have an above-normal temperature.” As fever is one of the more common symptoms of COVID-19, the GTH's implied ability is clear, without being explicitly stated.

The new TicWatch Pro S smartwatch isn’t really new at all
mobvoi ticwatch pro s news

The TicWatch Pro S is the latest Wear OS smartwatch from Mobvoi, and although it’s being announced in 2021, it is not a major upgrade over the TicWatch Pro 2020 model it replaces in the range. Perhaps most surprisingly, it doesn’t have the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor inside -- the staple of almost all smartwatches today -- but nor does it have the newer Snapdragon Wear 4100 chip, either. Instead, it has the Snapdragon Wear 2100, a processor released in 2016.

It’s the same chip running the TicWatch Pro 2020, and the 2018 TicWatch Pro before it and that’s not the only similarity. The TicWatch Pro S uses Mobvoi’s innovative dual-screen system to increase battery life, with a simple FSTN screen taking over always-on display duties from the 1.38-inch, 400 x 400 pixel AMOLED screen. It also has 1GB of RAM, GPS, and a 415mAh battery. It’s just as tough too, with the smartwatch meeting the MIL-STD-810G standard to withstand shock, sand, dust, and varying temperatures, plus it has an IP68 water resistance rating.
