Although it’s been available at Verizon for a few weeks now, the Sony SmartWatch 3 has been sitting on the Google Play Store for even longer with a ‘coming soon’ sign around its neck. Until today, that is.

You can now order the latest iteration of Sony’s smartwatch on Google Play for $250, with shipping showing at 1-2 business days.

Unveiled at the IFA tech show in Berlin a couple of months back, the Android Wear device features a 1.6-inch 320 x 320 color display and, notably, built-in GPS so you can accurately track your running or cycling sessions without having to carry your phone with you as well. In addition, Bluetooth connectivity means you can listen to music stored on your SmartWatch 3 via wireless headphones – again, no phone needed.

Powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex™™ A7 processor, Sony’s new water-resistant wearable also comes with 4GB of storage and 512MB of RAM, and draws power from a 420mAh battery.

The Japanese tech company has said it plans to offer users customization options, and is encouraging third-party developers to get involved. This means buyers should soon be able to choose from different straps, which separates in its entirety from the display module. Sony says it already has a metal wristband of its own in the works, which should land soon alongside the current silicon offering.

The rugged yet sporty design of the SmartWatch 3, together with its refreshed feature set, is a significant improvement over previous iterations of the device, which, considering how the smartwatch market is beginning to gather pace in terms of development, was a vital step in order for the device to have any chance of catching the attention of consumers.

Fitbit Versa 3 vs. Apple Watch SE: Can Fitbit outrun Apple?
Fitbit Versa 3 on a wrist.

The Fitbit Versa 3 is arguably the best fitness-tracking smartwatch out today, particularly if you have less than $300 to spend. At only $230, it's highly comfortable and easy to use, while its tracking features are comprehensive for its price, covering heart rate and blood-oxygen sensors, the ability to monitor skin temperature, and built-in GPS. However, as good as it is, it isn't the only low-cost and high-functioning smartwatch. Another contender is the Apple Watch SE, which, despite being priced at around $300, does pretty much everything the more expensive Apple Watch Series 6 does, even throwing in a timer to ensure you wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.

Both devices have their strengths, but which is the best? We pit them against each other in a head-to-head comparison to find out. By looking at their specs, designs, displays, health and fitness tracking features, batteries, and special features, we also help you decide which is the right one for you.

Apple Watch Series 6

Apple's 2020 release of the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE -- the newest models available today -- reinforces the widely held view that the Apple Watch is the best smartwatch you can buy. The advanced Apple Watch 6 has every athletic, fitness, and health-related feature available on a smartwatch, while the SE was designed to give a price break to people who do not need quite that level of pro features and case options.

Apple's stylish wrist computers come packed with an array of comprehensive health and fitness features and the ability of the cellular model to replace your phone for a short time. Our Digital Trends review singles out the Apple Watch Series 6 as "the best, most feature-rich smartwatch you can buy" and the SE as "the best Apple Watch for most people."

The Apple Watch Series 3 is 2020’s hidden smartwatch gem

The Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE, while new, aren’t the only Apple Watch models on sale. Apple also sells the Apple Watch Series 3 through its online store, for the SE-beating price of $200. Originally released in 2017, it's very much a product from a different smartwatch generation, but despite this, could the Series 3 the hidden smartwatch bargain of the year?

After wearing the Series 6 and SE one after the other for about a month, and then comparing the two directly to see which one is best, I swapped to the Series 3 for a long weekend to find out if it's also one to consider this year.
A different time
The Series 3 really highlights how Apple’s smartwatch tech has moved forward over the past few years, but also how right it had the formula over three years ago. It was made when Apple gave the option of a 38mm and a 42mm watch body, rather than the 40mm and 44mm body it does today, but there's not a big difference between wearing them.
