No plugins required: WordPress now fully supports VR content

Readying itself to be the content management system of the future as much as today, WordPress has now made it possible to publish and view virtual reality content through its platform. That means many of your favorite blogs and publications — Digital Trends included — can now display VR and 360 degree content in an easy-to-view fashion.

As nice an addition as this is for WordPress, it has been available through an additional plug-in for a while now (thanks Cnet). This is however the first official implementation of VR content in the WordPress platform, which means that more sites will have access to it without having to search it out, or look for additional updates for it.

At the user side of things, the content will appear as a video in webVR-enabled browsers, giving viewers the ability to draw their perspective around a full 360 degrees in 2D. However for those with a VR headset, be it a Google Cardboard, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, or any of a growing number of VR-capable headsets, there will be a small button which, when clicked, will broadcast the content straight into the VR goggles.

Although the audience for consumer virtual reality is still rather limited — a few million headsets at the last count — enabling VR to be a natively supported part of WordPress-powered publications makes it easier than ever to put VR content in front of consumer eyeballs. This will no doubt go a long way toward increasing awareness of what VR actually enables — even if a 2D display doesn’t get close to showcasing how effective an entertainment medium it can be.

This move could well be the beginning of more VR-centric websites, too. Perhaps we’ll start to see sites dominated by content which is best viewed in VR.

Before the pandemic, the gym was always a part of my weekly routine. So as the world scrambled to horde toilet paper amid last year’s first COVID-19 lockdowns, I scrambled to create some semblance of a home gym. I wasn’t alone. Gym rats fleeing their sweaty ships created a nationwide shortage of yoga mats, dumbbells, exercise bands, and other workout paraphernalia, with marked-up prices to match.

I had a hard time stomaching nearly five times the cost of my gym’s monthly membership just to acquire a decent set of dumbbells. So I checked out Peloton (essentially a streaming spin class) Hydrow (a new take on the tried-and-true rowing machine) and Tonal (Go-Go gadget wall gym), but they all shared the same flaw: Expensive dedicated equipment. Not to mention most were back-ordered and had extended delivery times.

This quirky humanoid robot can be teleoperated using a VR headset

The inventors of Reachy, a humanoid, open-source robot created by the French startup Pollen Robotics, have come up with a way to teleoperate the robo-creation through virtual reality. This opens up the possibility of users controlling the robot to carry out potentially complex tasks from anywhere in the world, so long as they're able to slip on a VR headset to do it.

"Using a VR device -- [a] headset and controllers -- a human can take full control of Reachy," Matthieu Lapeyre, CEO and co-founder of Pollen Robotics, told Digital Trends. "You see exactly what Reachy sees in 3D through its dual camera, and Reachy replicates your head and hands motions. You can control the gripper with the controllers’ triggers, and get haptic feedback from the controller vibrations. It's really like you were ‘in’ the robot to do the job. It works through the network, you can be either close or far away from Reachy, as long as you have a proper internet connection it will work the same."

VR lets scientists shrink down and ‘walk around’ inside their own cells

In the 1966 movie Fantastic Voyage, a U.S. submarine and its crew are shrunk down to microscopic size and injected into the body of a comatose Soviet doctor who has defected to the U.S., in an effort to destroy a blood clot in his brain that threatens his life. Since then, the idea of being able to shrink people down to microscale, often to solve some kind of medical challenge, has made its way into various parts of popular culture. But not, as of yet, into reality.

Sadly, scientists and engineers still have yet to develop a real-life shrink ray. But investigators from the U.K.’s University of Cambridge and 3D image analysis software company Lume VR have come up with a method that uses virtual reality to allow researchers to “walk around” inside individual cells in order to better understand some fundamental problems in biology and, in the process, learn to develop better treatments.
